Subject: [!] file list format change coming
We plan to change all-files.txt and recent-files.txt to make the
time/year column always display the year.
We will maintain the file lists in both formats for a month or so.
The files with the new format will be named new-all-files.txt and
new-recent-files.txt. After the changeover period, the new files will
be renamed back to their original names, though we will keep links to
them with the new names around for a while.

alarms which will play audio, display messages, execute other applications,
or power-off at alarm time. It also allows a user to send files or messages
>From one Macintosh user to another Macintosh user who is also running
AlarmBook without the need for a server machine. Revisions for version 1.4
include a new installer which installs correctly on international systems,
color icons, new dialog box format, and more audio files. Minor bug fixes have
also been incorporated into this release.

Subject: [*] CD+G Software for CD300 Drive
CD+G Player Version 1.0.1 Jim Bumgardner
The specs for the Apple CD300 indicate that it is CD+G compatible.
This means it can play discs in the Compact Disc + Graphics format.
Although Apple's drive *is* capable of playing these discs, Apple has
not seen fit to release any software which supports this feature -
probably because the format has not met with wide success.
I wrote "CD+G Player" for those of you who have a CD+G disc collecting
dust on your shelf and would like to see what it looks like. This
software requires a (fast) color Macintosh and an Apple CD300 or
compatible drive, such as the Sony CDU-561.
CD+Gs are not CD-ROMs, but regular CD audio discs that have 16-color
graphics encoded in the subchannel of the disc. There are up to 16
channels of graphics on the disc, which can be turned on and off, so,
for example, you could alternate between English and German lyrics.
These discs can be found hidden among the regular audio discs at your
local record store. A number of artists, including Chris Isaak, Lou
Reed, Talking Heads and Fleetwood Mac have released albums in the CD+G
format. The archive includes a list of known CD+Gs.

ZoomToCursor FKEY v1.0.1
My housemate just got a new PowerBook Duo 230, which she loves except for
the problem of the cursor sometimes being hard to find on the supertwist
(FSTN) liquid-crystal display. So I wrote a little FKEY for her.
ZoomToCursor is sort of like the homing device from a bad science-fiction
movie. When you press its key combination (cmd-shift-0), it quickly draws a
set of bold concentric circles of decreasing size onto the screen, centered
on the cursor. The effect is a little like the way the Finder "zooms"
windows open and closed, except without the Finder's subtlety.
Because ZoomToCursor is an FKEY, you need a copy of ResEdit or Resourcerer
to install it into your System file. If you are already using the
cmd-shift-0 combination, you can change ZoomToCursor's resource ID to
something else (preferably between 5 and 9).
ZoomToCursor FKEY is copyright =A91994 David Kreindler. All rights reserved.
ZoomToCursor is distributed under the freeware principal. You may copy it
and redistribute it freely, but you may not sell it, modify it or combine
it with a commercial product. That prohibition includes distribution on
CD-ROM.
If you like ZoomToCursor, send email to my housemate: rjl1@cornell.edu
or to me: dkreindl@well.sf.ca.us
CHANGE SINCE VERSION 1.0:
After using Version 1.0 of ZoomToCursor for a while, we noticed that
sometimes its zooming effect appears only in the front-most window rather
than on the whole screen. Version 1.0.1 of ZoomToCursor corrects this
problem. If you want a techie explanation: the clipping region of the
Window Manager's GrafPort is expanded to fill its portRect before zooming,
and it is restored to its original size and shape after.
This version also tracks the cursor while zooming, rather than just zooming
to the spot that the cursor was at when the FKEY was invoked. (This change
only really affects users who are using ZoomToCursor as a toy rather than
as a cursor-locating device, but we do not want to discriminate against
those users.)

Has anyone out there been able to access the Internet through a firewall ?
What we have is a Unix machine through which you can access the Internet
services including Telnet, FTP, Gopher, etc. But this is done only through a
VT100 emulation terminal. The Unix machine is connected to the internal
network of our organization. So I can telnet to the Unix box from my
Macintosh as well as my PC but not to the Internet. Is there anyway that I
can use the graphical front end of Mosaic or Gopher on my Mac (or PC) and
still be able to access the Internet ? Has any one attempted to tunnel
through a firewall ? Any help would be appreciated ! Thx.

Subject: Booting From A CD ROM
I remember reading somewhere that is it possible to boot the newer
Macs (avs?) from a CD ROM. I can't seem to get my Quadra 840av with
built in CD ROM to do that--even with the install CD ROM that comes
with the machine.
I must admit that I am a little confused about this. It can't be
as simple as inserting a CD ROM and booting because the System has to have
extensions in order to read the CD ROM to start from--I think.
The situation that I'm thinking of pertains to cases where a user
wants to install a new System or has trashed the old System and, thus,
can not boot from the hard drive.

I run Monitor (watches all running processes) on my 660. I have 8 apps
running in addition to the Finder and Express Modem. When the Monitor
program is in the foreground, it lists ClarisWorks 2.0 as taking up 70-80%
of CPU even when it has no windows open and is hidden in the background.
Now, I love ClarisWorks 2.0 and I use it for everything, but what's the
deal?
As the author of Monitor, this is the most common question I get from users.
The important thing to keep in mind on the Macintosh is that there is no
such thing as idle time, unlike systems such as UNIX. In the Macintosh all
idle CPU time is given to applications, even if they have nothing to do.
Hence, you see suprising amounts of CPU time being consumed by othersize
idle applications.
However, there are a few applications (most notably Claris applications --
FileMake Pro is particularly bad) which do alot of things while they are
"idle". As to what they are doing, who knows. Some applications do virus
detection while they are idle, others deal with AppleTalk and TCP/IP, while
others are simply poorly designed.
MS Word is an example of an application which has improved over time. Word
4 was really bad for eating CPU time, while word 5 is really good.

Actually, most workstations and routers can operate at higher than
38,400 bps. First of all, 38,400 is an asynchronous speed. Most commercial
routers (and bridges) can operated their serial ports synchronously at
speeds of 64,000 bps and higher. There are a series of ISDN bridges
that use both B channels for 128,000 bps throughput. With compression,
some of these devices can reach effective speeds in excess of 200,000 bps.
Not too shabby--especially when you consider that most directly connected
Ethernet workstations operate in the 500,000 to 600,000 bps range.
It is true that some older computers do have trouble sending data out
the serial port at speeds higher than 19.2 kbps. However, most Macs
are capable (with reasonably short cables) of 57,600 bps. Most modern
PeeCees can operate at 115,000 (approx) bps. Your mileage may vary.

I ask because I very often see new Apple software announced in MacWeek or

recent example, the February WAPJ says that the CD-ROM 4.05 software is

I recall a MacWeek notice of a new 7.1 updater of some stripe (Can y'all

in ftp.apple.com.
Ftp.apple.com is far from useless. But is seems to be far from current.

I haven't done extensive testing, but it seems that RAMDoubler was
at the root of some problems I've been having. It's an interesting problem
though. It only occurs when I can certain BBS's at 2400 baud with my Hayes

typed three characters. This happens every three characters. It's quite
annoying! RAMDoubler also slowed my IIci down when fetching files. When
running RD, I only got cps rates of 2,250, without it I get around 3,000. I
haven't been able to pinpoint any other problems caused by RD.
I've also used OptiMem too and it seems stable. None of the
slowdowns seen with RD are present.

*I'm not sure if this is the proper place to post help questions. If it

Hello, I am a student at the University of Washington, and have within
the last couple of months become a member of the growing internet
community here. For a while, I downloaded various applications and
documents from info-mac. But recently, when I call Sumex-aim (or moreover
one of the mirrors) I have problems listing the subject directories.
I was hoping this phenomenon could be explained. When I attempt to
list the files after going in to one of the subject directories (i.e.
Application, Virus, Utilities) my modem completely closes the connection
even to my host computer (NO CARRIER). I thought this might be a modem
problem, but I haven't reconfigured the parameters on my modem since long
before I began going to info-mac sites, and since then the modem has
worked fine. Also, I am able to go to (and retrieve files from) other
ftp sites. I would like to know if there is some special setting I need
to make before going in to an info-mac archive or if the problem is
simply either problem with my modem or my host. Do you think you can
help with this problem?
I use a USRobitics Mac & Fax modem connected to a Macintosh Centris 610.

I've also had strange results from pasting MacDraw Pro documents into Word.
My work-around is to save the picture as an EPS (an option from "Save As ..."

MacDraw Pro details that converting to a PICT loses. Be sure to save the
picture as a normal MDPro document also because the EPS version is useless

Subject: Networking with Stylewriter II (A)
You cannot place a StyleWriter (Any model!) directly onto a network
back bone - it has no processing power to deal with the network
packets. The StyleWriter's (And also some of the Personnal
LaserWriter's) can only be placed on a network by using them from
the Modem port of a Mac that is connected to the network.
A possible solution to this particular problem is a multi-port
switch for the modem port. There are several around - one
recommended one is the Axion (I think?) Switch but any A-B-...
Switch will do as long as it is correctly wired. This would mean
either the modem OR the printer is currently available.
Another possible solution is extra serial ports in the form of the
Hudler or QuadraLink serial cards that fit into NUBUS macs. Big
$$$'s though!
Hope this helps,

Subject: Problems with Gopher Surfer
I recently tried Gopher Surfer 1.0b5 for the Macintosh and it's performance
and features as a Gopher Server are MUCH better than FTPd. The Thread
Manager conflicts badly with VersaTerm Link (causes the latter to give disk
errors and wipe out received mail), but I might choose to give up VersaTerm
Link since Gopher Surfer has so many advantages.
I have an important question that I've wasted alot of time on so far, so I
would appreciate your help:
Gopher Surfer works fine on the uppermost link to the "published" directory.
However, the links below that, as shown in TurboGopher, contain strange
references such as F-1:771:filename to get to a filename, or
D-1:23388:directory to link to a directory. Turbogopher and other clients
don't mind, but trying to manually construct a link is next to impossible.
Even stranger still, when I try to link down below the default directory
with Mosaic, Gopher Surfer thinks I want to access the directory containing
the application and setup document, not the published directory. This is
true even if I use the strange directory references mentioned above. This
worked fine in FTPd.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks alot for your help.

Subject: Problems with SITcomm
First let me point out SITcomm is the best terminal program I have
ever used. The automatic and comprehensive file de/compression and
translation are great, the address book works exactly the way I expect,
and the user experience in general is far superior to anything else I
have used.
And that's coming from someone who has really not liked anything since
ProComm 2.4.2 under DOS in 1987 or 88. This doesn't mean SITcomm works
like a DOS program, but for a long time DOS had much better terminal
emulation programs than the Mac, probably owing to the fact that DOS
itself works more like a terminal. The point is that although I have
been using terminal emulators on a daily basis for years, I have liked
very very few, and SITcomm is one.

Yes, this *is* irritating, isn't it? What you're seeing is the Apple
modem tool being extra extra careful. A long time ago I did some
programming with modems, and I found that I had to go out of my way to
put delays between commands, etc., because some modems were just stupid
and were not ready to receive commands even though they had said so.
However, I think the Apple modem tool may go too far. I believe I have
heard Aladdin is working with Apple to make this a little more bearable.
Another option you have is to download one of the other tools from
sumex. I believe there is a scriptable tool. Maybe it is better. In
any case, not SITcomm's fault. Users don't like finger pointing, so
I don't pretend that this explanation makes your complaint go away,
but I have been able to content myself with the notion that now that
an active force like Aladdin is relying on the Apple modem tool as the
partial basis of a product, they will successfully encourage Apple to
fix whatever needs fixing.
>SITcomm will not dial unless it is the front-most application - it

Me too. I think this is also the Apple modem tool. I don't think there
is much excuse for it, and Aladdin must be working with Apple on a fix.
There is an Apple user interface dogma that says floating windows (and
their effects) must go away when an app goes into the background. This
is supposed to reduce user confusion. The problem is that the Apple
modem tool dialing progress window neither acts like a floating window
nor looks like one. It acts like a movable modal dialog and looks like
document. Yet when you put SITcomm into the background, the progress
window disappears. Ugh. Altogether, this seems to have been a poor
choice of window management strategies on Apple's part, and I can't
imagine for a moment that they will see otherwise if a credible source
like Aladdin points this out to them.
>You can't type in the terminal window to send commands to the modem. If

Actually, I thought this was *feature*. :-) But more seriously, if
you want to do this, set up a connection record for the Serial tool.
This will connect you to the modem directly. This is probably also a
good tool to use to write scripts, because scripts often want to have
complete control of the connection/login sequence.
>Say you simply want to turn off the modem's speaker in the middle of

What, your modem doesn't have a volume dial? :-) As I said, though,
use the serial tool.
>When all menu titles are disabled, some of the menu items under them

I agree that this is confusing. At the same time, I want all menu items
which can be available to be available. I imagine this is the sort of
fix that goes into 1.0.1.

Again, I see this as a feature, and I look forward to being able to
write scripts in a real scripting environment rather than a wimpy
wanna-be script editor like some other terminal programs have. Of
course, I am as yet no big scripter of SITcomm, but I have been in the
past of other programs.

Believe me, after you get used to SITcomm, ZTerm seems like a bad dream
you hope you only imagine remembering. I hope your specific concerns can
be resolved quickly so that you don't have to go back to that thing.

The Apple Modem Tool ignores the beep sound selected in the Sound control
panel. In fact, it doesn't use SysBeep at all, so it's not even affected
by things like ClickChange. It uses its own version of the simple beep.
That tool was written by Apple, not Aladdin; it's part of the system
software called the "Communications Toolbox". It's sort of like the printer
drivers--it's a "connection tool".
>Initializing and resetting the modem take a very long time (maybe as much

Once again, Apple's fault. The AMT is idiot-proof at the expense of
speed. You might try the Hayes Modem Tool, available at many FTP
sites; it's faster. Also, you can do a more thourough job of setting
custom configuration strings by using ResEdit on the AMT Prefs file.

That's probably Alladin's fault, although part of it may be your Mac.
If you have lots of extensions on a IIsi, you may be overloading your
processor between the System, the extensions, a comm session, and
the notepad.

That's the way it's designed. By Apple. The Modem Tool makes the modem
itself invisible to the user. If you want to send commands directly to
the modem, you can use the Serial Tool, but that eliminates the auto-
dialing features, etc.

Yes, but it's much more powerful, and you don't have to learn another
macro language once you learn AppleScript--it will work with a great
many programs, even between programs. For example, you can link SITcomm,
StuffIt, PageMaker 5, Excel 4, MicroPhone II 4.0... all via AppleScript,
right now, with more programs to come. Plus, it's a standard, set by
Apple. You can get AppleScript for $24 with several good books about
AppleScript programming--$24 for book AND disk.

Some of the solutions are "yell at Apple", some of them are just that you
don't understand the Comm ToolBox (pretty common problem nowadays), and
some of them are "if you don't like the included tools, find/buy others!"
SITcomm will work with any Comm ToolBox tool.

Fabrizio, what does FaberFinder do? I downloaded it from I-M today and
got a boot and an open dialog. When I clicked on an app, my Mac died. As
in dimmed finder icon in the upper right and nothing else. I had a sense
of deja vu. It was much like submitting a supply requisition when I was
in the army. Except I could do other things afterward.
Granted, I was using a "stripped" system. Courtesy of the minimum system
script that is also in the I-M archive.
With a stripped system, I mostly don't need a finder (Yes, I can diddle
the boot blocks). When it seems necessary, I use the bitty-finder (2K)
on LaCie's "SilverLining" boot disk.

Subject: RAMDoubler compatibility problem
I recently bought RAMDoubler, and have been very happy with it. I was
even happier when I got the upgrade to 1.0.1, which fixed a few problems I'd
been having:
* Sounds no longer 'break up' when any disk is being accessed
* Opening the second of two large apps no longer crashes half way through
However, I've found two compatibility problems, one which is definitely
RAMDoubler and one which is probably RAMDoubler:
1) The RAMDoubler 1.0.1 update got the guts to come out and tell me what I'd
been suspecting for a while: RAMDoubler is incompatible with development
versions of MacsBug.
While this may not seem like the end of the world for most people, I
believe that 6.3d4 is the only version of MacsBug that works on my LC475 (or,
for that matter, on any 68LC040 Mac). Bummer. :-( Anyway, this may be an
important consideration for LC475 or Centris 610 owners who use MacsBug for
programming (as I do... well, did).
2) Occasionally, after a few hours of use, the Finder decides that it's had
enough of life in general. It starts giving messages that "there is not enough
memory" to do ANYTHING: open windows, choose 'About this Macintosh...', etc.,
even when I quit all other applications and close all finder windows. Hmmm...
I can, however, restart. Gees, thanks a lot, Finder. How considerate. :-)
Anyway... MacsBug has gone the way of the dodo on my Mac, and I haven't
had any crashes since I installed the 1.0.1 update.
If anyone has any comments on my problems, I'd like to hear them!
Thanks,

On a lark, I decided to try RAM Doubler again. This time, at the end of the
extension-loading seqence, I got an error dialog that said "The System file
is damaged. This file can be fixed by running the Installer... blah blah
blah." I restarted, and told my extensions manager to turn off RAMM
Doubler, and the system came back famously. Turned RD back on, dead system.
Back off, no problem.
"
This is only a small guess, and it might be due to other problems, but it
resembles the only problem I have so far experienced with RAM Doubler, (16
MB on my Powerbook is great... even using a small part of the memory as a
RAM disk leaves 12 MB left for system and applications):
This might be a conflict between RAMDoubler and an older version of MacTCP.
When I removed the MacTCP Init (v 1.1), it rebooted all right. I think it
mentions this incompatibility in the manual, or else I remembering reading
about it somewhere else.
Hope it helps.

Hi Richard,
The main question is not: "WHICH SyQuest" -- it's "SyQuest or NOT ?".
I think 44mB SyQuest drives are cheap now, but the media is still around
US$ 60 for 44mB.
88mB SyQuests (at least the newer ones) can read and write (but not
format) 44mB cartridges. Using 44mB cartridges with 88mB drives is
sloooooow. And 88mB cartridges are also not the cheapest.
105mB and 270mB SyQuest -- I never saw them "in reality". Seems they
are definitely not the "new standard" - and they won't be able to
handle 44mB or 88mB cartridges, just because they use different cartridge
size.
In my opinion, the way to go is with the 128mB magneto-optical drives (or,
eventually, the 256mB, double-sided MO). Several brands are available,
which use different original equipment with differences in speed and
prices. Ask yourself which is more important -- speed or price. The
cartridges should not cost more than around US$ 40 for 128mB.
But of course - if you can get a "special deal" for a SyQuest drive
(new or used) and enough cartridges for the rest of your life, you
could still get it ;-)

Am not sure if you want program to program messages or person to person

Program to Program messages are very easy with HyperCard. You need the
"Send AppleEvent XCMD" to pass messages between two applications on a
Macintosh via AppleEvents.
Person to Person messages can be done with a shareware program called
broadcast. There are others that allow two people to chat across the
network but not that I am familiar with.

Sure, sure. I thought. Apple's stock answer for anything--zap the pram!
Well I'm here to tell you that the advice was right on. After zapping
the PRAM the desktop pattern now can be changed and speech recognition
is working like a charm. Who have thunk it!
So, if you are having problems with speech recognition, give it a

As for me, I am impressed that this simple cure worked so well! :-)

Subject: Three Things My 840av won't do...
Now that my long awaited Quadra 840av is up and operational, I have
noticed three things that the machine (and it's software) can't seem
to do.
1. Recognize my voice. (Everything seems properly installed and
configured. Strangely, the Quadra 660av across the hall in a
big, noisy room does just fine with voice recognition.)
2. Change it's desktop pattern. (We're not talking about fancy
extensions here. The General control panel can't seem to
change the desktop from it's boring grey. Hmmmm.)
3. Blank both monitors. (I have the Energy Saver control panel
installed. Even though it says that it will "turn off the screen(s)
when idle", only the Apple 16" monitor turns off. The AV monitor
does not. Maybe it does this with an AC off condition. In that
case, I'll need an extension cord for my monitors!)
Any insight into these problems would be appreciated!

Can anyone point me to a bulk converter under UNIX that will copy a
TOPS file hierarchy, with conversion, to an AUFS hierarchy? Mounting both
volumes and copying through a Mac is very slow! Thanks.

Dear Netters,
If any gophers have been bugging you about not being allowed off-campus, there
is a telnet webster dictionary.

Hope this helps.
